بدأت الولايات المتحدة تكثيف استخدامها للطائرات بدون طيار في شن هجمات ضد قيادات ومقاتلي حركة طالبان والفصائل المسلحة الأخرى بمناطق القبائل الباكستانية على الحدود الأفغانية، في أعقاب مقتل ضباط تابعين لوكالة الاستخبارات المركزية الأميركية (سي آي أي) في قاعدة خوست بافغانستان.
