الإستراتيجية التي انتهجتها المعارضة اليسارية "العلمانية"، كانت تقوم على تطوير التعاون السياسي والحزبي مع قوى إسلامية، لاختراق القاعدة المحافظة، وسحب المتدينين إلى الحزب وليس الصدام معهم.
