يقدر علماء الجيولوجيا عمر الغابة المتحجرة (شرق القاهرة) بنحو 35 مليون سنة، ورغم ذلك فهي تعاني من الإهمال الحكومي، فضلا عن تقليص مساحتها لصالح المشاريع الإسكانية.
