الهوامل والشوامل كتابان وليس كتابا واحدا؛ يتضمن أسئلة لأبي حيان التوحيدي وأجوبة لمسكويه، وتحت عنوان رائع يصور الأسئلة على أنها إبل أهملها صاحبها فكانت هوامل أي تائهة، ثم يعود للأجوبة فيصورها على أنها حيوانات الحراسة التي تعيد الإبل إلى جمعها فكانت شوامل.
