اكتشف باحثون أميركيون بعد التلاعب بجينات فئران تظهر عليها أعراض كتلك التي يعانيها الأطفال المتوحدون آلية جينية قد تفسر هذا المرض. وأظهرت الأبحاث أن بعض الجينات الموروثة تؤدي إذا ما اكتسبت بأعداد اقل إلى أعراض تشبه تلك التي تظهر عند الأولاد المتوحدين.
