تقام اليوم المراسم الرسمية لإعلان جنوب السودان دولة مستقلة بحضور رؤساء دول وممثلين عن المؤسسات الدولية والإقليمية والأفريقية. ويوقع رئيس الدولة الوليدة سلفاكير ميارديت الدستور الجديد ويؤدي القسم. يأتي ذلك فيما أصدر مجلس الأمن الدولي قرارا بإرسال قوات أممية لحفظ الأمن بالجنوب.
