بعد 15 سنة قضاها خلف القضبان، انتقلت قصته إلى الأوساط الإعلامية والحقوقية، فتقرر الإفراج عنه في ديسمبر/كانون الأول عام 2007. وبعد سقوط نظام حسني مبارك ثار التساؤل: ما حقيقة الرجل الذي قال لمبارك :"اتق الله"، فسجنه تلك المدة؟
