اصطفت الدول الغربية واليابان والأمم المتحدة إلى جانب كوريا الجنوبية في اتهامها لجارتها الشمالية بإغراق سفينة بضربها بطوربيد مما أدى إلى تدميرها ومقتل بحارتها، وهي نتيجة انتهت إليها لجنة تحقيق دولية، في حين دعت الصين الأطراف المعنية إلى ضبط النفس.
