انطلقت من قاعدة كيب كانافيرال الجوية الفضائية أول طائرة مدارية أميركية غير مأهوله في رحلة مدتها تسعة أشهر بترتيب من سلاح الجو. وحملت الطائرة إكس 37 بي على صاروخ وسط تأكيد مسؤول في سلاح الجو بأنها جيل جديد من مكوك الفضاء.
