أسقط حزب تاميلي رئيسي مطالبه بمنح الاستقلال لشمال وشرق سريلانكا، وهو استقلال خاض من أجله تمرد تاميلي صراعا انتهى بهزيمته. وقبل التحالف الوطني التاميلي الحكم الذاتي للشمال والشرق مع سلطات حقيقية. وكان ينظر إلى هذا التحالف على أنه وكيل سياسي للتمرد التاميلي.
