توصلت دراسة طبية إلى أن الإصابة بالجلطة الدماغية ذات منشأ وراثي، وأنه إذا أصيب أحد الوالدين بالجلطة الدماغية في الخامسة والستين من العمر، فإن احتمال إصابة الأولاد بالمرض نفسه يزداد أربع مرات عند بلوغهم هذا العمر.
